Primal Shift Podcast #51: The Ultimate Time-Saving Workout | CAROL Bike and REHIT - Ulrich Dempfle
In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I sit down with CAROL Bike CEO Ulrich Dempfle to discuss the science and benefits behind Reduced Exertion High-Intensity Interval Training (REHIT), a fitness modality developed to provide the most effective workout in the shortest possible amount of time.
For example, the CAROL Bike gives you a full cardio workout in just eight minutes, focusing on two strategically-timed 20-second sprints. Dempfle explains how this is possible, detailing the science behind how REHIT induces glycogen mobilization and the release of key molecules that signal the body to build more mitochondria, thereby increasing aerobic capacity and overall fitness.
We also talk about Dempfle’s journey from working in the German automotive industry to healthcare, where he recognized the critical role of exercise in the prevention of injury and disease, as well as the challenge of getting people to commit to regular workouts.
Whether or not you decide to give CAROL a try, this episode provides a valuable introduction to the science and application of REHIT, with tips on how to leverage this ultra-efficient training strategy to optimize your health and wellness.
In this episode:
00:00 - Intro
02:16 - Benefits of Short, Intense Workouts
04:18 - The Difference Between REHIT and HIIT
07:24 - Ulrich Dempfle’s Background and Journey
09:05 - Addressing Time Constraints In Exercise
12:00 - The CAROL Bike’s Effect on Your Body
17:52 - Psychological Aspects of Intense Workouts
23:50 - Optimal Frequency for REHIT Workouts

About Ulrich Dempfle:
Dempfle is the CEO and co-founder of CAROL Bike. After graduating in mechanical engineering from Germany’s leading tech university, he worked with some of Europe’s top automobile manufacturers. From there he moved to London, where he pioneered the use of AI for operational efficiency within UK health services. After watching a BBC documentary on Reduced Exertion HIIT (REHIT), Ulrich realized its potential to be the most effective cardio workout. The problem? REHIT was only possible in a lab setting. So Ulrich co-founded CAROL and worked with the world’s leading exercise researchers to take REHIT out of the lab. 40 prototypes later, the world’s only REHIT exercise bike was launched.

Great test! I would like to see the results of a steam bath, i.e., not a hot dry sauna that you add water to but a room heated by steam alone. That is what I use and the air temp only gets to about 115 F but at high humidity the heat index is in the 200 F range.

I eat 2oz of frozen raw beef liver daily with my waking meal. I also buy ground kidney and heart from the butcher and mix it with my regular ground beef. I’ve been doing this for a year and haven’t gotten sick AT ALL - not so much as a common cold or runny nose. Nothing 😁.

THIS IS HORRIBLE ADVICE! Animal products just add fuel to the fire, make your insides, more inflamed, and you’re putting your body in such a state of inflammation. Animal products are very acidic and you’re just building an environment for cancer. I’m a nutritionist and unfortunately, I’ve seen what these stupid carnivore, keto, Atkins diets do long-term. I lost one friend to sudden cardiac arrest at 50 years old while on the carnivore diet. Another to cancer at 55. Whole Food Plant Based Diet is the way to healing, aging backwards, saving the planet (factory farming is the number one cause of dead sea zones, climate, change, water, depletion, and more. I go to a spa and use red light therapy for 15 minutes a day. Within the first month: I sleep like a baby. My anxiety has decreased five-fold. The pain in my knees have decreased slightly. Scars on my feet from sun damage and bug bites are completely cleared. (This was an unexpected shocker). I have more energy (slightly) and feel more relaxed throughout the day. Lower back pain decreased by maybe 75%. I had hormonal acne on my face. It cleared in two day. Scarring cleated in 5. I will use this forever.

Red light therapy (and Move+ Pro) isn't placebo but certain injuries can take months (as in 6+ months) to heal. Obviously, if you continue injuring or abusing the tissue, it'll heal much slower or not at all. Have you reached out to Kineon to get feedback on usage protocols? Also, there is such a thing as too much red light considering it's a stressor.
